Dealing with tooth extractions and oral surgery

The thought of losing a tooth can be a worrying one. Many patients fear the dentist and have to deal with anxiety when visiting.

This can be made even worse when considering tooth extractions and oral surgery. In Edinburgh, at Meadowbank Dental Practice, we understand that there are lots of reasons why you could feel nervous about visiting the dentist, but we aim to make it as stress-free as possible for you.

Extractions and Oral Surgery in EdinburghNervous patients

If you have had bad experiences at the dentist in the past, particularly as a child when experiences go in at a deep subconscious level, the smells and sounds of the dental surgery may make you feel anxious when visiting for treatments or check-ups.

Many patients may even avoid visiting the dentist until something goes seriously wrong and requires urgent treatment.

The key to feeling good about going to the dentist is having a dentist you can trust. Here at Meadowbank Dental Practice, we’re used to treating nervous patients. We take the time to talk you through any procedures you may require so you feel confident in knowing the facts.

Modern dentistry has made most procedures practically painless and our dentists are gentle and caring. You can also bring a family member or friend to help you relax.

If you’re still nervous, we can offer two different types of sedation. The first comes in the form of tablets that will help you to relax. The second comes in the form of intravenous sedation. With both forms of sedation, you’ll remain conscious, but largely unaware of any sounds and smells.

Types of treatment

We offer a wide range of dental treatments, from preventive dental care to emergency appointments for when something goes wrong.

Along with keeping your teeth feeling healthy and working efficiently, we can bring out your teeth’s full potential, making them look as good as they feel.

There are lots of reasons why people all over the UK are choosing to seek cosmetic dental treatments, from their social lives to their careers.

Your choice for extractions and oral surgery in Edinburgh

If you have an issue with your teeth, jaw bone or general health that requires you to have oral surgery, then you will want to be able to see a trusted and experienced dentist. At Meadowbank Dental, our oral surgery clinic has been in operation for more than ten years and we can offer you safe, effective and well-supported dental surgery for many common issues.

If you need to have a tooth taken out then the most likely course of action is that you will be able to have it taken out by your normal dentist. However, there are more serious cases such as an impacted wisdom tooth that will require you to use the services of an oral surgeon.

As well as extractions and oral surgery in Edinburgh, you can also get assistance with sedation for treatments if you are a particularly nervous or phobic patient.

Oral cancer

Oral cancer is the sixth most common cancer in the UK and we offer a screening process for it at Meadowbank Dental. During this process we look for anything unusual in the mouth including lesions or suspicious lumps. While many are no cause for concern, there are some that will require a biopsy or perhaps removal to be on the safe side. This is something that would be done by an oral surgeon.

Rapid treatment

If you are referred for extractions and oral surgery in Edinburgh at Meadowbank Dental, we will do our best to see you as soon as possible. We understand that dental issues can be distressing and have a huge impact in many areas of life. We also know that, the sooner you get the treatment you need, the more likely it is that you will get the results you want.

For many issues, surgery is a last resort and so we know that by the time people come to us, they have often exhausted other options. We want to be able to offer the final step and full solution to as many issues as possible and look forward to giving you the help you need.

Extractions & Oral Surgery

Being told you need to have a tooth out, or that you require another oral surgery procedure, can be scary news. However, at Meadowbank Dental Practice we have our own oral surgery clinic, where you will be treated by experienced oral surgeon Dr Girish Bharadwaj, who uses the latest techniques and equipment to make any procedures as comfortable as possible. For complex procedures and for nervous patients, we can provide this treatment under sedation.

oral surgeryWe are one of the few dental practices in Edinburgh to offer specialist oral surgery services. Dr Bharadwaj has been running his clinic since 2006, treating both private and NHS patients and accepting referrals from other practices. Our aim is to treat all of our oral surgery patients within two weeks of referral.

Tooth extraction, particularly wisdom tooth extraction, are the best-known oral surgery procedures. However, oral surgery covers the diagnosis and surgical treatment of a wide range of conditions affecting the mouth. Whether you are already a Meadowbank patient or have been referred to us from elsewhere, you can rest assured you will receive only the highest standards of care, and a detailed, effective treatment plan.

Here are some of the conditions that you may be referred to Dr Bharadwaj for:

Complex dental extractions

Most tooth extractions can be carried out by your dentist. However, more difficult cases need the expertise of an oral surgeon.

Wisdom Teeth Extraction

Wisdom teeth often become impacted, causing pain and other problems. They can easily be removed with oral surgery.

Apicectomy (Root End Surgery)

If a root-treated tooth has recurring infections, an Apicectomy seals the tip of the root to stop infection egressing to the bone.

Lump and cyst removal

Benign lumps and cysts of the mouth or jaw, such as polyps, are removed and sent for analysis. If anything suspicious is found you will be referred to a hospital consultant.

Dental implants

Implants are permanent replacements for tooth roots, used to support false teeth such as dentures or crowns.

TM Joint Dysfunction (TMD)

If you have been diagnosed with TMD and other treatments have failed, surgery may be offered to correct the problem.
