Teeth Whitening

Enhance your smile with teeth whitening

Many people wish that they had whiter teeth when they look in the mirror. Whether you have stained teeth due to poor brushing routines or simply because you drink a lot of tea, at Meadowbank Dental we want to make your smile shine again.  We provide teeth whitening in Edinburgh that can be done at our practice or at home, and will leave you with teeth that are several shades whiter. Having a whiter smile and getting stains removed can make you appear more youthful again, not to mention leave you feeling much more confident when it comes to smiling and speaking in public.

Results from whitening treatments will always vary from patient to patient as everybody’s teeth are their own individual shade. However, you will be able to express to your dental practitioner how many shades brighter you would like your teeth to be and they will be able to plan your treatment according to this.

Our treatments let you whiten your smile at our practice or at home

When you decide to find out more about teeth whitening in Edinburgh you will discover that we have more than one treatment option available at Meadowbank Dental, so you can opt for the one that suits you and your teeth the most. Regardless of whether you have your teeth whitened in our practice or at home you will need to make a consultation appointment with one of our professionals to ensure your teeth are suitable for treatment.

If you choose to whiten your teeth more gradually at home in your own time then you will still need to visit your dental practitioner to have impressions taken of your teeth. Once you have had these taken your dentist will have custom-made trays available for you. These will fit comfortably over your own teeth, and you will need to wear them for around forty-five minutes for two weeks to ensure the treatment works properly. Your dental professional will demonstrate how to put whitening gel into the trays too, as this is what is needed to actually whiten your teeth.

If you would rather not trust yourself with a home-kit, then our fully qualified professionals are more than happy to whiten your teeth for you. We also offer combinations of in-practice whitening and home-kits, as this is said to achieve the most desirable results.

Can everybody have their teeth whitened?

Unfortunately having teeth whitening in Edinburgh is not a suitable option for everybody. If you have artificial teeth in the form of either dental implants or removable dentures then they are unable to be whitened, which is the same when it comes to dental appliances such as crowns, veneers and bridges. If you wish to brighten up your smile and you have these appliances then it may be a case of speaking to your practitioner about renewing them so they appear fresher.

Suffering from gum disease or tooth decay will also lessen your chances of being able to have whitening treatment, as your practitioner will only allow you to undergo this treatment if your teeth are strong and healthy. You may also not be able to have this treatment if you suffer with sensitive teeth.

Getting whiter teeth is easy

The days may be dark and short, but that doesn’t mean you have to give up smiling until the sun comes back in spring. In fact, if anything, there’s more socialising to be done during the long winter nights in Edinburgh and so having a cracking, bright smile is a great asset for all those parties.

Teeth Whitening in EdinburghIf you want to get teeth whitening, there are 2 ways to do it at Meadowbank Dental in Edinburgh.

You can either have it done in our surgery, or you can pick up one of our DIY kits and carry out the treatment yourself at home. Some people even combine the 2.

Whichever way you choose to whiten your teeth, the treatment will be so much more successful if you get your teeth deep cleaned with the hygienist first. You can also choose how white you want to go.

Whitening in our surgery

This is very quick, taking around an hour to whiten your teeth by several shades. You like back and relax, while we paint the gel onto your teeth and activate it with a UV lamp.

At-home whitening

For treatment at home, you need to come into the surgery so that we can make you a pair of whitening trays that fit your teeth exactly. You take these home, along with a milder gel than the one we use in the clinic. You put the gel into the trays and wear them every day for around 45 minutes until your teeth have reached the desired shade.

Sorry, it won’t work on you

If you have had any prosthetics made of dental porcelain, such as veneers, dental implants or crowns, you can’t have your teeth whitened. This is because dental porcelain does not respond to the whitening gel and you would end up with teeth of different shades. Not a good look. If you are thinking of having veneers, get the whitening done first so that we can match the veneers to your newly whitened teeth.

Whichever way you choose to whiten your teeth, avoiding the foods and drinks that caused the stains in the first place will extend the life of the treatment.

Dental implants in Edinburgh – your questions answered

Are you missing teeth and looking for a way to restore your smile with lasting results? If you do not like the idea of removable dentures or bridges, then you may be a good candidate for dental implants. Dental implants can create a reliable, sustainable solution to patients who are missing one or several teeth.

At Meadowbank Dental Practice, we use dental implants to secure crowns, bridges or dentures directly into your jawbone. Dental implants are stable, durable and can last for many years without the need to be replaced. However, you may be surprised to know that dental implants in Edinburgh are not for everyone.

Dental Implants in EdinburghWhat are dental implants?

Dental implants are small, titanium posts that are surgically inserted into the jawbone, replacing missing tooth roots. Because they are made of titanium, a material that is highly compatible with the human body, dental implants have the ability to fuse with the jawbone and help regenerate bone tissue.

What oral problems do dental implants solve?

Dental implants have come a long way and there are no longer used only for replacing single missing teeth. They can replace multiple teeth where a dental bridge may be used, while they can also be used to support a fixed denture to replace all of a patient’s teeth. In some cases, patients can have new teeth in only one day (i.e. Same Day Teeth, All-on-4).

How long is the dental implant process?

The dental implant process can take anywhere from 2-6 months. Once the dental implant is attached to the jawbone, your dentist will wait for a few weeks until it has fused to the bone tissue. Once this process is completed, your dentist will attach a prosthetic tooth – this can be a crown, bridge, or denture.

Who is a good candidate for dental implants?

In order to have dental implants placed in your jawbone, you will need enough bone mass to support them. Moreover, patients who are in good health tend to be better candidates for dental implants.

Why do we call them pearly whites?

Have you ever asked yourself why teeth are fondly known as pearly whites? Maybe you haven’t, but this and other dental questions are what we mostly want answers to at Meadowbank Dental Practice, where we spend our time thinking about teeth so you don’t have to.

Teeth Whitening in EdinburghAfter much reflection, we have concluded that it’s because teeth and pearls have similar light reflecting qualities. This is because teeth and pearls are both made in layers. An oyster transforms a grain of sand one layer at a time, and that is also how our teeth are made. Teeth are a layer of enamel covering a layer of dentine covering a central core of pulp. Just as no two pearls are the same shade, so the whiteness of our teeth varies from person to person. Some people’s teeth are more pearly cream than white. Some are almost pearly yellows. Some verge on being pearly greys, but if you’ve got pearly blacks, you need them removing.

Sadly, our whites lose their pearliness as we age. This may be due to staining from various dark foods and drinks, such as tea, coffee, red wine and blueberries. However, it can also be the result of years of brushing, biting and chewing, eroding the enamel until the yellower dentin below starts to show through.

Whatever the reason for the loss of the sheen on your pearly whites, or even if you were born with less than white pearlies, teeth whitening in Edinburgh at Meadowbank Dental Practice can restore their sheen again. Indeed, you can even choose the shade from a card. The best one to go for is not necessarily the whitest one, but the shade that implies strong, healthy teeth, rather than that you have had your teeth whitened. No one has ever seen a brilliant white pearl, and neither has Nature ever given anyone brilliant white teeth.

If you are having teeth whitening and veneers or a crown fitted, you need to be aware that the whitening gel can’t change their colour. Veneers, crowns, inlays and onlays will all stay the same shade of white that was originally chosen.

Doing the white thing for your smile

Teeth whitening is one of the most accessible cosmetic treatments for many people. While, at Meadowbank Dental, we try to ensure that our procedures are within the reach of everyone in Edinburgh, teeth whitening remains one of the most consistently popular choices.

If teeth whitening in Edinburgh is something you are considering, it is worth looking at some of the reasons why people like it so much.

You can talk to your dentist about what shade you want your teeth to be after your treatment is finished. They will try and match your expectations as closely as possible. Most people want something that is bright, clean and stunning but also natural.

The effects of teeth whitening wear off after a while and you will need to keep topping up to enjoy the same effect. If, at this point, you decide that you would like to let the effect fade completely then you can. Your teeth will gradually return to an untreated shade.

There are two options you can consider when choosing a method of teeth whitening.

You can get impressions of your teeth made at our clinic, which are then used to create custom-made trays. You take these home along with our whitening product and use the trays to hold a special gel next to your teeth overnight. You repeat this process for around two to three weeks and you will see it subtly begin to take effect.

Your other option is to have in-clinic teeth whitening in Edinburgh with us. This is achieved in a very short space of time – just an hour or two. You can do this if you are looking for fast, effective treatment in time for a special occasion or if you would just prefer to get the process over and done with as quickly as possible.

In either case, you can opt to top up at home every few months or so by wearing custom made trays for just a night or two. This will extend the effect. You can also help your teeth to stay shiny by avoiding or limiting certain drinks and food that your dentist can advise you on.

Zoom Teeth Whitening

It’s the new year, and for many people that means embracing a new look. If you want to change the appearance of your smile for 2016, one of the simplest and quickest way to do it is with teeth whitening treatment.

teeth whiteningTeeth whitening treatment is gentle and non-invasive. All it involves is lightening the colour of your teeth using special whitening gel, without making any changes to their shape. At Meadowbank Dental Practice we use Zoom teeth whitening, which is safe, tested and effective, unlike whitening treatments sold online.

We offer two options for teeth whitening: you can carry it out at home yourself, or you can come to see us in the practice for treatment. You can also combine the two options.

If you go for home teeth whitening, we’ll check you’re suitable for treatment and your dentist will take impressions of your teeth. That’s so we can make you bespoke teeth-whitening trays, which will fit over your teeth exactly, minimising the chances of the teeth whitening gel coming into contact with other parts of your mouth. When your trays are ready, your dentist will demonstrate how to use them. You just need to place a small amount of whitening gel in the trays and wear them for about 45 minutes a day for two weeks.

For whitening at the practice, we don’t use a laser light as studies have shown that this is not effective. You will need to come to see us for at least two sessions, possibly more, depending on the shade you wish to achieve. Many of our in-practice whitening patients also top up treatment with a home whitening kit.

Teeth whitening is suitable for most patients. However, it must only be carried out on healthy teeth, so any decay or gum disease will need to be treated first. If you have very sensitive teeth, whitening treatment could make the problem worse, and teeth with many fracture lines may also not be suitable for treatment. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, whitening should be postponed until your baby is weaned. All of this will be discussed at your initial teeth whitening assessment.
