White Fillings

You don’t have to stay grey

Having a great smile is so good for the self-confidence. People find that the happier they are with their smile, the more they smile.

And the more you smile, the more serotonin you release, which in turn, makes you feel happier. It’s a fantastic positive feedback loop.

White Fillings in EdinburghOn the other hand, if you feel self-conscious about the state of your teeth, you are more likely to smile less and to cover you mouth when you do smile.

People are very sensitive to each other’s smiles. We gauge them to find out how warm and friendly other people are, and, something that evolved in pre-history, how healthy and safe to be around they are. Now, if your teeth don’t look so great, people do notice and perhaps even subconsciously draw away.

This can be one reason why it’s a good idea to have white fillings instead of amalgam. Amalgam may be a great filling material, but attractive it is not.

If, like many people, you have a collection of amalgam fillings, please don’t feel bad about them. When you are a child, your enamel is not as hard as it will be later on, and you are still learning to brush your teeth well. Plus, you probably consumed your fair share of sweets and sugar drinks.

You can, however, replace your grey amalgam fillings with white fillings made from composite resin. This is a mixture of either glass or ceramic and resin. We can colour match it to your teeth, so when your filling is in place, it won’t show up like the grey ones do.

At Meadowbank Dental in Edinburgh, we can’t offer white fillings on the NHS, but these days our white fillings are so much stronger than they were when they first came out, so we think they are a great deal.

They have certain advantages over amalgam too. One big one is that we can shape your filling, putting back the mounds and valleys of the chewing surfaces.

The price of the filling depends on where it is in the mouth, how large it is and how complex. Do give us a call to find out more. Or ask next time you come in for a check-up.

Uncovering the benefits of white fillings in Edinburgh

Dental technology has evolved over the years and traditional metal fillings are not the only option available to treat cavities and tooth decay. Composite fillings, widely known as white fillings, are made from a mixture of plastic and fine glass particles. Although they were introduced in the 1960s, they have been gaining popularity in recent years for different reasons – from aesthetic to practical ones.

White Fillings in EdinburghAt Meadowbank Dental, we use white fillings to help our patients maintain a healthy and beautiful smile. Compared to metal ones, white fillings are more attractive and will let you smile with confidence. Additionally, we will match the colour of the fillings with that of your teeth for a completely natural appearance.

Less tooth preparation

Unlike composite fillings, metal fillings require a larger hole to be drilled in your tooth so that it can properly adhere. Unfortunately, this tends to weaken the tooth structure and for this reason, metal fillings often need replacing every few years. With composite fillings, only the decayed portion of the tooth is removed, as these fillings are built in layers inside and around your tooth.

Stronger teeth

White fillings can be sculpted directly onto your teeth and as a result, they do not only cover cavities, but strengthen the tooth enamel as well. Metal fillings, on the other hand, are wedged in your tooth and biting pressure is not evenly distributed on them. Therefore, white fillings can protect affected teeth more effectively.

Natural appearance

The most obvious advantage of white fillings is their appearance. Not only are they less visible than metal fillings, but they can also be customised to match the exact shade of your teeth. This advantage offers patients a more natural-looking dental restoration.

Silver Vs White fillings

You may already be aware that there are different kinds of fillings out there. Some are silver or gold in colour while others are white. Years ago, the only option was silver, amalgam fillings. This means that, if you have had your fillings for many years, they are more likely to be silver than any other colour.

If this is you and you would like to make a change, it is now possible to do so. You can make the transition from silver to white fillings in Edinburgh at Meadowbank Dental.

White Fillings in EdinburghWhy make a change?

It is important to note that you do not have to make a change. If your fillings are intact and your teeth are undamaged then it is absolutely fine for you to continue with your silver fillings. Your dentist will look them over each time you have a check-up to make sure that everything is as it should be.

Most people choose to make the shift from silver to white for aesthetic reasons. When you open your mouth, silver fillings are usually quite obtrusive. Anything that affects the look of your teeth can feel like a stigma that says things about the health of your teeth or your habits. White fillings blend in with your teeth and are not easy to spot. This means you can laugh and smile with ease and without concerns about your look.

The process

If you have silver fillings, they will be carefully removed with a guard in place to protect you from any distribution of mercury or dust. The area is then drilled to prepare it and to remove any additional decay that has formed. Your new filling is then added to the same spot and that’s it.

Silver to White Fillings

While as dentists we are committed to prevention rather than cure, we know that many patients will need a filling at some point in their life. In the past, when you needed a filling the only option was to use metal amalgam. We still use this material, which is strong and durable and perfectly suitable for teeth at the back of the mouth, but if you need a filling at the front of your mouth you will want a less obvious option.

white fillingsThe problem with metal amalgam fillings is their colour. They are silvery-grey, meaning they stand out and are noticeable when you smile. Fortunately, there is another option available: white or tooth-coloured fillings.

White fillings have been around for decades but techniques and materials have improved a lot in recent years. This means that while once white fillings were thought of as weaker than metal amalgam ones, they are now considered almost as strong as amalgam fillings.

More accurately described as “tooth-coloured fillings”, white fillings are made from a composite resin material, which your dentist will carefully match to the natural colour of your teeth. This means that they are strong enough to withstand the biting and chewing forces in your mouth whilst also blending seamlessly into your tooth, so nobody will know you have fillings.

If you have existing metal amalgam fillings, it’s also possible to replace them with white fillings. Whilst we don’t believe in treatment for the sake of it, if your metal fillings are old and worn, or if they’re causing you embarrassment when you smile, replacing them is a simple procedure.

Your dentist will take out the old filling and check there is no new decay. If they do find any more decay this will also be removed under local anaesthetic before a white replacement filling is fitted.
