If you’re unlucky enough to suffer an accident or injury involving your teeth, you may need a crown. Crowns are dental restorations that are used to fix broken teeth, as well as those weakened by decay and those with particularly large fillings. If you have had root canal treatment you will also need a crown, because it gives additional strength to the treated tooth.
Crowns are also often an ideal solution if you have old, discoloured fillings that you dislike showing off when you smile or laugh. Because the crowns we make are tooth-coloured, we can replace your old fillings with them to give your smile a more aesthetically-pleasing appearance, making you want to show it off again.
A crown is basically a cap for your tooth. It can be made from a variety of materials, although ad Meadowbank all of our crowns are tooth-coloured, to ensure they blend naturally into your mouth.
If you need a crown, you will need a couple of appointments. At the first appointment, your dentist will prepare your tooth so that it’s the perfect shape to receive the crown. This may involve removing old fillings or some of the outer layer of the tooth, and is done under local anaesthetic.
Next your dentist takes an impression of the tooth and sends this to our laboratory for your crown to be made. You may have a temporary crown fitted in the interim.
Once your crown is ready, we’ll call you back in for a second appointment. We’ll check that both you and your dentist are happy with the appearance and fit of your crown before it is permanently attached using a special dental adhesive.
By replacing old fillings with crowns, your smile will be rejuvenated, and you’ll be keen to show it off once more.
